The Basics of Solar Energy
The cost of energy is on the rise. This is due to a few factors. Energy sources that are currently being used are being depleted and there is no way to renew them. Also these energy sources are harmful to the environment so extra money must be spent to ensure that harm is minimized. As energy costs rise people are looking for alternatives that will save them money and be better for the environment.
Solar energy is an alternative energy source that has been getting a lot of attention. Solar energy has many benefits over current energy sources.
Solar energy is renewable. Solar energy comes from the sun, so it is plentiful and will always be there as long as we need it.
Solar energy is clean. The sun produces no pollution and the process of collecting, storing and using solar energy produces no pollution or harmful byproducts.
Solar energy is also cheap. The actual energy form the sun is free. The only real cost is the installation and purchase of a unit to gather, store and covert the solar energy for use.
To use solar energy it must be collected first. This is usually done through solar panels, which are just exposed to the sun and soak up the energy. There also has to be some way to store the energy, which is usually part of the solar panel unit. Then the energy is converted into useable energy through a conversion unit.
Solar energy is not perfect, though. It does have some limitations and issues that are still being worked on through research and study. Solar energy's biggest issues are:
- Availability in certain areas and climates. Since some areas do not get sunshine all the time, this can cause issues with being able to get enough energy. - Inability to provide enough power for demanding energy needs. Certain energy needs require large amounts of energy and solar energy sometimes is not enough. This means there is often a requirement for backup energy to supplement the solar energy. - Expense of units used to collect, store and convert.
Solar energy is not perfected just yet, but research is ongoing and quite promising. The idea that solar energy one day could replace current energy sources is very viable. As research continues the advances in solar energy use will help to make it one of the energy sources of the future.
